A Paraklesis is a service of supplication on behalf of the living, for their well-being. It can be addressed to a specific Saint or to the Most Holy Theotokos whose prayers are requested through the chanting of the supplicatory canon together with psalms, hymns, and litanies. During the Dormition Fast (August 1—14), it’s sung on weekday evenings, in preparation for the death, or “falling asleep” of Mary, the Theotokos.
